Y3 – Day 36 – The Gunas

In yogic and Vedic tradition, there are three tiers of happiness that are taught, called the three Gunas. Basically, two are illusions and one is believed to be the right path.

The lower, base kind of happiness is not happy at all. It is mostly based on pleasure and darkness which leads to further debasement and loss of self. It begins as innocent, harmless fun and betrays and turns on you in the end, ensnaring you, for example, in addictions, alcoholism, pornography, prostitution, etc.

Then there is the level of happiness where it seems like it is what you want and everyone else says it is also, but it is outside yourself so it turns out to be deceptive and poisonous in the end. This would be the unending and unsatisfactory search for money, prestige, power and outward beauty. Another avenue where the fantasy reveals the foolishness of falling for this sort of ambitious and selfish pursuit, imprisoning its victim with falsehoods and emptiness.

Then there is the real happiness that is disguised as poison and you want to avoid it at all costs and it is painful but it turns out to be the true, sweet nectar of the gods by fulfilling and rewarding you with veritable bliss and lasting happiness. These are the storms of life that turn out to be blessings. These are the down turns, heartaches or efforts in life that turn out to be instrumental to your growth and depth of understanding, bringing joy, gratitude and freedom to your existence, from the inside.

I thought of the three gunas, and especially authentic happiness, when I received some pictures from back east this week. Please allow me the wide and large latitude of metaphor.

Here is the beginnings of the storm: You fear it, you prepare for it but you don’t know what it will look like, you know it will be grim, but how scary and for how long will it last? Will it be as bad as everyone says it will be? IMG_3682Then, you are in the middle of the storm: It is dark and lonely and you have never been or seen this before, it is unpredictable and you are navigating new territory, the feelings are unbearable and you may think you will never make it out alive.IMG_3683Finally, it is over: You assess the damage, you look around you and see what you can salvage. You process the destruction, you pick up the pieces, you re-evaluate again and you process some more. You may talk or write about it incessantly in order to release it as well as to gain the proper perspective.IMG_3684

You are on the other side of it: We all rejoice! You realize what a gift the storm was and you take the time to make something beautiful, lovely and cheery out of it! NAMASTE!IMG_3688

Thank you to V in NYC for the pictures and inspiration.

Y3 – Day 15 – Contemplation Gifts

Reading and re-reading Gifts from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh inspires me to write about the treehouse in the same manner. Perhaps, Secrets of the Forest or Memories above the Mountains or The Treehouse Speaks or Observations of Nature’s Value or My Cabin’s Soul.

Any pine cone related thought will do. How they drop heavy, weary from high suspension, off the highest tops of century old evergreens. How when they let go, they are mulched into the earth, used as decor by passing tourists or sown into the ground to resurrect a new tree. Filling their tissues and cells with nutrients all summer long, they submit to the winds which shake them off in the fall. Drumming on rooftops, bouncing off rocks, they lay in wait for hungry squirrels and chipmunks, critters of the forest. A conical skeleton is left to rot.

Any lake reference works. How the water reflects the sky in brimming blue. How the basin is teeming with aquatic life. Ducks skimming across to fetch feed dropped by children and adults alike. The sightseeing steamboat, The Queen, cruising by for all to see. Facts which are measured like how the level rises and falls according to the rainfall. The top layer sinks due to the frigid depth and then the bottom rises to the warmer atmosphere, recycling and regenerating, keeping the water refreshed. A scenic vista, photographed countless times, documented as a famous Hollywood set for decades.

Any meditative idea becomes poetic. Viewing issues differently, making every moment unique. Themes, relationships and mysteries are uncovered and organically discovered within this contemplative world. The thinned air lightens your mind. The colors bring rest. Rocks are weathered, jagged, broken while twigs come alive or snap. Nature in its glory. Streams reveal the health of the mountain while birds forage and communicate. The Starling Blue, the Red Headed Woodpecker and the black and white Spotted Chickadees with yellow throats and spotted tummies dance and sing, nourish and swoop. They each have a love song.

The woods have a hold on me, even just thinking about it.

Y3 – Day 10 – Zen Mountain

DSC00082Inside my head is peace.

When I am struggling, remind me of this moment, the snapshot of heaven.

When I am caught up, battling my own poisoned, imaginary, scary thinking – May I remember the snow and the contrasts and the squirrels.

Mindfully paying attention…

Y3 – Day 2 – Resting – Plus – Prep

Resting, cleaning, putting dishes, gifts and silverware away. Plus, last minute shopping, prepping and packing for Japan. Our daughters are backpacking (in the coldest winter since who knows when) around Japan for 2 weeks. Hostels, bullet trains (shinkansen) and low budget traveling is for the 21 and under crowd.

A great app for International texting and photos is What’s App? if you ever need or want to keep in ‘comunicado’ with travelers or family abroad.

Yen are so beautiful, I just had to take some pictures.

Look for better and better photos, my Christmas gift was a camera with attachable lens capabilities. It might take me a while to learn how to focus and get the most out of my new viewfinder but I will surely practice and post as I go.

Y2 – Day 317 – Rocks and Fossils

There’s a great and informative geological store in Lake Arrowhead Village called – Lake Arrowhead Jurassic Fossils.  Here you will find geodes, crystals, jewlery, fossils, petrified woods, minerals and rare and unique, one of a kind earthly gifts.  Robert and Teresa are the owners and together they make a strong and dynamic team.  Robert knows a lot about the scientific, mining and business side and Teresa makes jewlery and explains the metaphysical qualities of it all.  They both have traveled extensively to refine their skills and do research.  They have settled in our mountain – lake area and visiting their shop is always an education.

The fossil/geode/rock/dinosaur/statue side.

The jewlery and rare gem and stones side.

Y2 – Day 302 – Mountain Time

It is so absolutely refreshing here!  Went to the Library bookstore and snatched another Isabel Allende novel for $2 and it is her hardcover new bestseller.  It is called Ripper and looks like a murder mystery based in San Francisco.  Also came home with seventeen other books, all worthwhile, from classics to non-fiction.  I am especially keen about reading Flying without Fear by Duane Brown, Phd.  This incredible phobia is keeping me grounded and I do not like to be limited.  Hopefully, I will get some courage to even read it.

It is time for a fire, as it is getting colder now in the afternoon.

I made a delicious vegan stew like dish in one big pot.  Mushrooms, carrots and onions chopped up and sizzling in hot tarragon infused olive oil.  Then I added canned diced tomatoes, veggie paste, pasta seasoning, water, soy spaghetti, garbanzos and vegan ground meat.  Once it cooked up a bit, I tossed in some artichoke hearts from a jar and a few kalamata olives.  Yum.  Cooking with Altitude is inspirational.

Y2 – Day 301 – Autumn

“For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.” – Edwin Teale

Picture from ML, out east in Orient Point, Long Island, New York

Back east, in the midwest and at higher latitudes, the seasons are defined and you know its is time to pull out your sweater, your closed toe shoes and your light jacket.

Autumn or Fall arrives suspiciously here.  It sneaks up as a tease with cooler mornings, fresher evenings and then disappears during the day, backtracking into high temperatures, unrelenting sunshine and dryness.  Living in southern Cal can grate on your “I need a certain weather to go with the holiday” sensibilities.  Instead of cool, grey days with crispness, we get Santa Ana hot, dry winds and fire warnings.  I have layers of clothes on not because every where is heated when you walk indoors, like back east, but because the day radically changes from comfortable to unbearable in a few short hours.

I think maybe it is time to drive up to the mountains and feel the crisp, clean, fall air.  I am so grateful for my treehouse and my escape valve.

Funny how New Yorkers dream of beachy, sunny weather during the sometimes long, dreary winter but I don’t know anyone who wants to escape during the beautiful, colorful, leaf-changing autumn.  On the contrary, people flock to see the leaves on trees afire with sun-kissed hues.

My appointment with yellow, orange and red leaves awaits.   A roaring fire in the evening required.  Happy Autumn!

Y2 – Day 292 – Autumn Now

Autumn is a time for reflection.  As the leaves turn from bright greens to dramatic yellows, fiery reds and crisp oranges, thoughts become pensive and ready for review.

It is a season to harvest ideas, begin and end projects, till the memories under and clear a path for fresh encounters.

As we prepare our souls for winter, let us re-evaluate our spirits.

“The more I wonder, the more I love.” – Alice Walker

Wonders never cease to amaze when miracles abound.

Awakening to our true gifts astounds us.
